Centre for Human Computer Interaction Design

City’s Centre for Human Computer Interaction and Design is the largest group of its type in London undertaking basic and applied research into the relationship between people and technology with the aim of creating more useful and easier-to-use systems.

Over the past three years, the Centre has attracted more than £2m in research income, most from the UK's research councils, the European Union's Framework 5 programme, and UK charities. More recently it has received significant funding from Eurocontrol and NATS to improve the early design stages of new air traffic control systems. The Centre has been boosted by the recent arrival of Professor Helen Petrie and her team, who are experts in the design and evaluation of interactive systems for elderly and disabled users. This team has been invited by the European Union to become the UK national contact centre for the new European Network for Design for All and e-Accessibility (EdeAN) to promote accessible design of hardware, software and information.

Main areas of research:

  • User-centred requirements engineering
  • User diversity, with particular focus on disabled and elderly users
  • Interaction design and usability evaluation.
